Advanced First Aid Renewal in BC: How to Renew Your OFA Level 3 Ticket
If you have a WorkSafeBC Advanced First Aid certificate, also known as the Occupational First Aid (OFA) Level 3, you are aware that it is not permanent. Apart from the fact that it is only valid for three years, you must renew it before expiry to continue working as an Advanced First Aid attendant. The following will explain how the renewal process works, who should consider it, what the course and exam are like, and how to prepare for them.
Since the time allocated for the course is limited, the instructors assume that the students have sufficient theoretical background and practical expertise. Therefore, the course does not provide a detailed revision of the materials covered during the first first-aid training. Instead, it offers a comprehensive update and assessment of one’s practical aptitude and readiness.
In order to renew an occupational first aid level 3, a candidate needs to pass the occupational first aid level 3 exam. Ensure that you plan to renew your certificate well in advance so that you have enough time to complete the course and the examination before the expiry of your ticket.
What Is Advanced First Aid Renewal?
Advanced First Aid Renewal refers to the 35-hour course designed for individuals who have already acquired the Level 3 card. The course is not intended for novices but for those with prior experience and knowledge of first aid. It focuses mainly on refreshing the participants’ practical skills and theoretical know-how. As such, the course is compact and fast-paced.Since the time allocated for the course is limited, the instructors assume that the students have sufficient theoretical background and practical expertise. Who Should Take the Renewal Course?
The renewal is for you if:
- You currently hold, or have previously held, an OFA Level 3 / Advanced First Aid certificate
- You work as a designated first aid attendant, or your employer requires you to hold this ticket
- You want to keep your certification active without repeating the full initial course
If you have never held a Level 3 ticket, renewal is not the right route. You would start with the standard Advanced First Aid course instead.
How the Exam Works
Passing the exam is what earns your new certificate. Here is how it works:
- A person authorized by the Workers’ Compensation Board conducts it. It is not marked by your course instructor.
- It takes place within a week after the last day of the course.
- It has two parts, a written segment and a practical segment.
- You need 70% or higher on each part. A strong written score does not make up for a weak practical result, or the other way around.
Given those rules, treat the course days as exam preparation from day one.

Tips to Prepare for Your Renewal
Since the course doesn’t reteach everything, a little preparation makes a big difference:
- Review your theory. Go back over your Level 3 manual and refresh the anatomy, patient assessment and treatment protocols.
- Practise your hands-on skills. Run through patient assessments and treatments out loud, step by step, until they feel automatic.
- Bring your questions. The course is fast, so list any weak spots beforehand and ask the instructor early.
- Rest before exam day. Both exam segments count, so being alert matters as much as knowing the material.
